The DATUM mark takes its shape from the sentence at the top of your article: you step in where projects break down between design, vendors, installation and operations.

How it started

The DATUM mark began as a page of pen sketches in a notebook. The page opens with the brief, runs through the early ideas and ends on one circled direction. The mark below came from that circle.

A page from a ruled notebook covered in hand-drawn pen sketches. The top of the page has notes: Project Management, Conveyor, Milestones, Gantt, with arrows to the phrases Protecting the scope, Handoff and Bringing to the finish line. Below are two rows of small marks: boxes beside a diamond, an arrow and a timeline ending in a diamond, B and BS monograms in and beside diamonds, and stacked chevrons. A circled drawing at the bottom shows two offset square brackets around a diamond beside the word BLUESTEM.
  1. 1

The brief. Project management, conveyor, milestones and a Gantt chart, written as notes.

  2. 2

Early explorations. Bars, timelines, and B and BS monograms, most built around a diamond.

  3. 3

The circled direction. Offset brackets protect the scope and close the handoffs. The diamond is the milestone at the finish line.

How the mark is built

Two offset L brackets frame one diamond. Both brackets have the same line weight. The diamond sits at the point where the two brackets meet in space. The wordmark letterforms are custom, drawn for Bluestem and not set in a font.

What each part stands for

  • The diamond

The milestone diamond from a Gantt chart. A milestone is a date the whole project agrees on.

  • The two brackets

They frame the diamond and bridge the gaps between design, vendors, installation and operations.

  • The name Datum

A datum is the fixed reference point that everything else is measured from.

One mark for your promise: every vendor measured against the same plan.

Color, with a job for each

Seven colors. Each one has a name and a role.

  • Datum Navy

  • Datum Blue

    #1B62A3

    Buttons, links, the upper bracket

  • Milestone Green

    #3F923C

Graphics only: the diamond and progress marks

  • Field Green

  • Slate

    Links and accents on navy

Milestone Green stays on graphics, never on text. Milestone Green does not pass contrast for body copy.

Type: IBM Plex Sans

IBM Plex Sans for headings, body and tables. The face is plain and readable, and the face sits beside the squared logo without copying the logo. Figures line up in schedules and dates.

Control over scope. Control over execution. Control over results.
